Face on Mars. Critique.
For possible updates (7-2001). /id12.html

The CRITIQUE is essentially finished. Very few authors have openly contributed via Internet to the FINAL stage of debate and interpretation of the Face-on-Mars (FoM) after the may-2001 release of NASA/MSSS outstanding image of FoM at noon. No more global surprises are expected in the extraordinary and supreme Fine-Art that venerable martians have sculptured and carved in that grand Face-mesa. They stretched as much as possible the BAND-WIDTH in Their Fine-Art message by squeezing FOUR totally diferent human portraits. They had to use, to such end, two methods of compressing Fine-Art: the use of 'NEGATIVES' and the SPLIT-FACE trick which is certainly also used in mayan and ancient mexican sculptures and masks (as correctly pointed out by Hoagland and Kynthia). Let us reserve this page for outstanding enhancements and Fine-Art work of interpretation.

Best enhancement from UNIAM for 'Anger'='Furia': negative AND split-face.

7-july-2001.

Dr. Lahoz suggests that the names for the four human characters in FoM should be Latin. Since Face=Faz=Facies is feminine, the four qualifying adjectives in Latin become:
a) Brava (at sunset, in positive); b)Sacra (at sunrise, in negative); c) Osculans (left, at noon, in positive); d) Ferox (right, at noon, in negative). Here we present the Ferox in accurate detail (very dark contrast) for all sensitive artists to make their own interpretation. It is obviously a very sophisticated depiction (via solar shadows) of the human face expressing anger and ferocity. Angel's interpretation (below) is very accurate in proportions since he used a very light printout as guiding background-sketch. Undoubtedly there is moustache, squared chin, wide-open mouth, wrinkled nose and centrally foccused eyes. It seems that these are shadowed by dark glasses which are supported in the slightly pointed (spooky!) ears. While 'Osculans' shows love and tears, this 'Ferox' looks as barbarian and ready to uncontrolled action. Its furry coat and hat form part of garment which makes it comparable to movie characters as 'Spok', 'Zorro' or even 'Robinhood': not necessarily evil, but beneficient against injustice towards oppressed people.

Angel's accurate drawing of Ferox: exact proportions

3 contrasts for 'Osculans' with drawing of Ruo Yu.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
Hard to get the best enhancement for 'Osculans'. Here go 3 different contrasts which complementarily give all (not many) details which the venerable martian artists chose for this loving and tender character. With extreme brightness the eyes and nostrils are best shown, whereas in darker contrasts the whole delicate traces of the kissing mouth are best seen. Below: artist Ruo Yu has masterfully depicted (except for obvious tears) all such details. The pupils are outstandingly clear, but the sclera which makes the shape of human eye requires greater magnification as shown in page IIb. Ruo's work remains the first and insuperable interpretation: proportions are nearly exact despite that Ruo produced a free-hand work without guiding sketch. Perhaps the nose should be a bit longer with slightly wider nostrils.
Let us pause in here. We wish that a choir of pure voices of children, who know nothing about mischievousness and dirty thoughts, join us with the poet to sing:
---
If the Sun is at noon, highest and shiny..
ring the bells and sing along: "Hail, Virgin Mary!".
---
Si esta el Sol en su esplendor de mediodia..
las campanas dicen ya: "Ave Maria!".
"UBI CARITAS ET AMOR, DEUS IBI EST!".

Excellent enhancements due to Bara & Hoagland.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Bara and Hoagland have correctly made mockery of the infamous and extremely silly note by J. Garvin et al. (NASA employees). See reference in left side of present composition. We do not share the opinion about these NASA members being consciously 'deceivers': that would be a real crime against Science which cannot be condoned and would deserve instant expulsion from NASA and from any other scientific Institution. If not 'deceivers' those who published that note against Art in FoM are really mentally incapacitated (as far as Art-critics is concerned to say the least) and as such still deserve to be fired from NASA: they have substantially damaged its reputation and nailed an extremely gross and stupid insult against human knowledge. The whole world of intelligent people is by now laughing and ridiculing that idiotic 'no mouth, no nose, no..', because obviously FoM has much more than a pair of eyes, noses, nostrils, mouths, ears, chins, foreheads, etc., etc. Four human 'Faces' in total with supreme Fine-Art and quasi-divine martian Intelligence which Garvin et al. have infamously insulted!. There is no excuse: who has not the foggiest idea about what Fine-Art is, should prudently freeze his mouth and typing implements. The evidence of Fine-Art at FoM was already established via 'Brava' and 'Sacra' as shown in present Web-site with Graffeo-Lahoz discovery. Now it is clear that the main Art goes in the SPLIT-FACE which FoM magnificently shows at noon; 'Brava' and Sacra' are merely wonderful complement to show Fine-Art at all times of the day. The venerable martian Artistry has been as explicit as humanly possible: therefore Bara and Hoagland in their very well worded article deserve our most warm applause in damning the publication of Garvin et al. who, if not 'deceivers', certainly have shown gross incompetence and arrogance.
