A few comments. First to emphasise that the Art in FM (="Facies Martis" = Face-on-Mars = Faz sobre Marte) is not merely Fine-Art, but "Art & Anatomy" or 'Scientific Art' to describe the most basic items present in the 'Human Face' which was generated along 1 Ga of evolution (= an eternity) in the surface and mostly in underground habitats of Mars.

Art & Anatomy in FM.

We see in above composition that FM covers a very wide set of informative items about the martian human face:
a) In Brava a juvenile (short) face was depicted to suggest early Homo Sapiens in Mars with already well developed cranial capacity but with small nose when atmospheric pressure was substantial at the martian surface.
b) In Sacra the elderly face of a dead person in magnificent perspective to suggest the last stage of martian civilization.
c) In Osculans it is the adult view of a loving person with already long nose and concomittantly the superior senses of vision and 'touch' (at the kissing mouth) to provide basic anatomical data for shape of eyes, lips, and nostrils.
d) In Ferox the adult view of opposite emotion (anger and ferocity) is described as pure Fine-Art; while such face is also used to give anatomy of 'hearing', 'taste' (wide open mouth) and 'smell' in large nostrils and nose.

enhanced 'eye' in Osculans.

Here go the FOUR FM characters as they appear when the sun shifts from sunset to noon and sunrise. Clearly the martian Artist wanted to imprint a hint (to say the least) about human Anatomy and nicely distributed the 'five senses' among the 2 adult views: the simplicity of female Osculans carries anatomy for 'vision', 'smell' and 'touch'; whereas the male Ferox shows 'hearing', 'smell' and 'taste'.
See to the left the extreme details which a good original at high resolution brings for purpose of describing the human eye in Osculans.

Another early author who instantly recognised the split-face concept of Lahoz and Hoagland is Webpage of 'Martian Revealer'. His excellent enhancement for 'Ferox' is here translated to the NEGATIVE after croping slightly in central portion. Osculans is 'female' and has slightly wider face than macho Ferox: thus central kissing lips belong ONLY to Osculans and have to be croped out to yield the intended narrow nose (with wide open nostrils) of Ferox.
Ferox is really the most sophisticated of the FOUR characters which FM presents: not only the masterful lines of the Face but all the details of complex coat and hat as if prepared for very cold environment. Note how well hidden are the hair-dress of both adults Osculans and Ferox: probably the terrestrial 3 main races, which differ in head-hair shape and color, were already present in Mars and the quasi-divine Artist Who made the blue-prints for FM took due precautions to comprise ALL human races by hidding such hair in the head using coat and hat for the female Osculans and the male Ferox.
Also in Sacra (above) the head-hair (if any at all for a possibly old and bald person) is nicely hidden by the shroud or blanket. However in Brava the hair-dress is shown as falling straight down: it is a 'juvenile' face and such type of hair can be taken as common to all human races.
